2016 Budgetary Allocation To Education Worst In 23 Years – ASUU

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Kano has stated that the federal government’s 2016 budgetary allocation to education is the worst in 23 years.

According to them, the education sector particularly tertiary education is a breeding ground for the required and capable man power to move the nation to economic prosperity, but the attention it received under the present administration is scary when considering the globalisation trend where knowledge based economy remains the only alternative socio-economic development.

In a press conference held at the secretariat of ASUU, BUK chapter, the Zonal Coordinator, ASUU-Kano, Professor Mahmoud M.Lawan has however lamented that the TSA policy infringed on the principle of University autonomy.

Mahmoud decried further that universities in the country were owed over N605 billion by the federal government out of the N1.518 trillion agreed to be released for the universities.

According to the statement arbitrary removal and appointment of Vice Chancellors in the new Federal Universities and amendment of JAMB, NUC and National Minimum Standards, establishment of Institutions Act 2014 as well as non release of of white paper on special visitation to the eight universities are also badly affecting Nigerian universities.

He added that ASUU has consistently since 2012 requested the federal government to set up its negotiating team for the purpose of reviewing the 2009 Agreement as enshrined therein, saying the federal government refused to do so and it had became a cause of serious concern.

ASUU-Kano zone decried that their colleagues in other universities are being owed salaries for nearly five to eight months, accusing State governors of extravagant expenditures that are of of no significance.

EDUCATION IN AFRICA, HOW FAR?

Education standard in Africa seems to have improved drastically, following the intense call for renaissance.

It has become imperative to begin to apportion responsibilities to those who deserve it to lead the way in ensuring a proper standard of education in Africa. The hope for Africa welfare in education is something better and believing in Africans and their way of life. By way of judgment, we are not lagging behind per se, but all we Africans need how in our commitment and resilience in chanting a better course for a better society.
Education in Africa is a welcome development because Africans are gradually talking over the standard and norms across the globe. Take for instance in the field of Engineering, science and technology, Banking, Industry, Medicals and other fields of endeavors.

Africans has fared well but Academic and other fields of life so far the education standard has improved drastically and there is the need to continue to improve forever.

2016/2017 ADMISSION LIST UNITY COLLEGES



FEDERAL GOVERNMENT RELEASE 2016/2017 ADMISSION LIST OF CANDIDATES INTO UNITY COLLEGES

The federal government has released the admissions list of successful candidates into the federal Unity College for the 2016/2017 academic year.
Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, announced this in a statement issued by the ministry's deputy director (press), Mr Ben-Bem Goong, on Thursday in Abuja.
Adamu said candidates could check their names on www.fineinterviewtest.com. He urged candidates who took part in the National Common Entrance Examination to check their names on the website.
The statement said a total of 89,231 candidates took part in the examination, out of which 49,869 met the cut off mark.
He said "of those that met the cut off mark, 24,422 candidates have been admitted, with Federal Government Girls College (FGGC) Enugu, and Federal Government College (FGC) Owerri topping the list with a total of 400 students each, while Federal Science and Technical College (FSTC) Otukpo and Federal Government Girls College (FGGC) Tambuwal had the least number of 120 candidates each", the statement said.
It further directed all unity school to resume on 19th September, 2016.
The minister therefore call on all Nigerians to make the unification of the country a major priority. Insisting that Nigeria unity is a better one for educational standard and development.
With the new developments on admission into unity schools, the ministry of education Abuja has set a standard which has make for a better educational upliftment of prospective candidates into these colleges.
Such will equally foster more academic learning environment and peaceful co-existence.

Ever since the federal government made the HND/BSc qualifications, it has elicited reactions from different polytechnics in Nigeria.
When this reporter went round to interview some persons and students across some of our polytechnic in the south east such as Abia Polytechnic Aba in Abia state, federal Polytechnic Nekede in Owerri, and Federal Polytechnic Oko, the students reactions from these institutions was full of excitement even as they hope that this implications by the federal government, would help to remove the disparity completely.
In a separate interview with some students at the Federal Polytechnic Oko, there reaction was that of unending joy in their heart. One of the students who gave her name as Ugorji Chinenye said "I am happy for the steps taking so far by the federal government to bridge the gap between HND/BSc holders, now they would not be any discrimination again by students from the polytechnic ".
Another student name withheld, expressed delight on the new developments and however called on the federal government to ensure the through and proper implementation of it for the betterment of polytechnic students who has suffered discrimination for so long.
In mass communication Department of federal Polytechnic Oko, a student, Mazi Chimezie Okoroafor never hide his feelings when he said "I am happy for the government intervention in their bid to end the so long discrimination between HND holders and BSc, indeed Polytechnic education can never be allowed to suffer".
