Education Worst In 23 Years – ASUU

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU,
Kano has stated that the federal government’s 2016 budgetary allocation to education
is the worst in 23 years.
According to them, the education sector
particularly tertiary education is a breeding ground for the required and
capable man power to move the nation to economic prosperity, but the attention
it received under the present administration is scary when considering the
globalisation trend where knowledge based economy remains the only alternative
socio-economic development.
In a press conference held at the secretariat of
ASUU, BUK chapter, the Zonal Coordinator, ASUU-Kano, Professor Mahmoud M.Lawan
has however lamented that the TSA policy infringed on the principle of
University autonomy.
Mahmoud decried
further that universities in the country were owed over N605 billion by the
federal government out of the N1.518 trillion agreed to be released for the
universities.
According to the
statement arbitrary removal and appointment of Vice Chancellors in the new
Federal Universities and amendment of JAMB, NUC and National Minimum Standards,
establishment of Institutions Act 2014 as well as non release of of white paper
on special visitation to the eight universities are also badly affecting
Nigerian universities.
He added that ASUU
has consistently since 2012 requested the federal government to set up its
negotiating team for the purpose of reviewing the 2009 Agreement as enshrined
therein, saying the federal government refused to do so and it had became a
cause of serious concern.
ASUU-Kano zone
decried that their colleagues in other universities are being owed salaries for
nearly five to eight months, accusing State governors of extravagant
expenditures that are of of no significance.
